Water articles and possible contacts

I've posted a couple of articles on Water and Africa that might be helpful in providing background information. Also, Matt Turner, Geography Professor at the UW might be a good contact for us.

Safe Water

This expedition will build from extensive work by the Safe Water Team of teachers with University of Wisconsin engineering students who will be working on safe water systems for villages in the region of Muramba. The focus will not be on the work of Americans however, but on the general problem of safe water provisioning in Rwanda; alternative ways that villagers secure drinking water; women, youth, and water hauling; and youth work on safe water improvements (including Rwandan youth work with Engineers Without Borders team). The expedition will include forays or beginnings of forays to a range of ancillary topics (as the ESL concept requires), including, potentially, uses of surface water; well digging; water chemistry; sources of water vessels, pipes, and equipment; topographic mapping for water engineering; age and gender division of labor; and a host of North American parallels: Where do we get our water? Who controls it? How safe is it to drink? Who pays for it? What are the advantages and pitfalls of various water provisioning systems available in the U.S.?
